Fall = Burlap

I am back on my burlap kick again. I just love the rustic versatility of this inexpensive textile. The combination of rough, coarse brown against soft, pretty white linen and lace makes me swoon. Add some pretty fall foliage and viola! The perfect fall decor!

New ideas for burlap use are everywhere. When we attended the Farm Chicks Show in Spokane this past June I snapped photos of a few ideas.

Totes were everywhere. Here are some made from re-purposed feed sacks and burlap bags.

These pillow covers are simple envelope style, but the wonderful trims and buttons add softness and whimsy.

Sources abound to purchase burlap. I've even seen it on the bolt at Walmart. Colors are also available readily on the www, but I prefer the natural look.

Here is a gorgeous color combination using burlap. These headboards would be so easy to make!

Farm Chicks Weekend 2011

Whew! A week following my return from the Farm Chicks Show in Spokane, WA I finally got to sleep in. Feeling quite refreshed this morning and will be heading out shortly to spend the morning "sailing" . . . . yard saling that is!

We spent Friday visiting some of the local thrift shops and then the evening at the Spokane Valley Mall. Up early we made our way to get in line for the show and were there 2 hours early. Because we had purchased our wrist bands the day before, our line started moving at 9:45.

There were so many great booths! You can visit my facebook page to view the entire photo album. I decided to show images of the wonderful handmade items today. Like totes made from feedsacks!

I have been listing like crazy this week and just snapped another 60 photos for more! I found a stack of vintage Vogue designer patterns at our local thrift store last week. Then, on a shoppping trip to nearby La Grande, OR last Wednesday to pick up my new Pattern Cabinet (related post coming soon!) I found more great patterns which I hope to get photographed and listed this weekend. Kathy at Alma Janes in La Grande was nice enough to part with one of her vintage Simplicity pattern cabinets to help me organize my little work space. She also has a great little vintagey collectibles antique shop. I didn't get to meet her when I was there, but I sure enjoyed checking out all her great stuff! I will snap off some photos on my next trip and post!

I want a pattern cabinet

For over a year now I have wanted a pattern cabinet. I am not picky about the style or manufacturer, just crazing organization. My current set-up is labeled shoe boxes on a huge shelf.

You have to be fast to get one of these. I guess Joann's sells the newer models once in a while when they "upgrade". I found one like this on Craiglist last summer for $50 and immediately called, but it was already gone.

I also found this gorgeous antique Butterick cabinet, already sold, on the internet.

I don't know how long it will take, but I am determined to find one of these! If you have one, please share and if it's for sale, please let me know! There is no telling how far I may travel to get my hands on one. You know how it is when you are totally obsessed with something!

WANTED: More hours in the day!

Lutteroh and more Patterns

My first Lutteroh book (aka The Golden Rule) will soon be listed on ebay. Are these hard to find or what? Of all the sewing and needlecraft related items I have found over the years at garage sales, thrift stores and through private parties that have contacted me knowing my passion for these items, I have never seen one before.

This book is undated, but obviously from the early 1970s. It is only the book with designs and templates, none of the drafting tools are included.

For those of you that are not familiar with the name, Lutterloh is a fashion pattern drafting company that began in Germany in the 1930s. Amazingly the family owned business still exists today!

Rather than draft patterns from scratch, Lutterloh allows a seamstress to draft their desired pattern from a book of designs and diagrams. Lutterloh styles are quite varied and include designs for children and men, too. The book I have includes 280 designs. Lutterloh uses a modified system of radial grading to create full size pattern pieces in the desired size. The system uses a specialized tape measure and ruler with special scales that work with the diagrams in the books. All the items needed to get started are available on ebay and other websites.

Farm Chicks Antique Show!

A couple of weekends ago I attend the Farm Chicks show in Spokane with my daughter Mindy. It was a great day . . . boy our legs were worn out by that evening!

The lines were LONG, even 1/2 hour after the doors had opening!

Really cool primitive "cake" display in the main lobby.

Spring Sewing

My daughter and I went to Joanne's a couple of week's ago and loaded up on some gorgeous fabrics and a couple of patterns. One pattern that we both loved was New Look 6937. I have plans to make several tops for both of us from this pattern.

Has anyone tried this one? I have read a couple of reviews that say the neckband is troublesome.

I am also thinking about this dress. I LOVE it. But typically side wraps don't work for me. I have sort of a straight up and down figure . . . not much bust or waist. Any imput about this one?

Any last, I am really hooked on these pants. Too trendy for middle-age?

Hi Everyone!

I know, I know, long time no post. Well, life is full of challenges and changes and mine is no exception. I began my new job at Wallowa County Health Care District (Wallowa Memorial Hospital) this past week. I have not worked outside the home, full time, since 1999, so we are all adjusting around here. I plan to continue with my Etsy and Ebay stores, but I will probably have fewer listings.

I have several projects going right now, mostly revolving around organization. I am sorting and destashing my fabric piles and lots of great vintage pieces and bundles will be showing up in my Etsy vintage store, thlvintage, over the next few week.

I just snapped off a big group of patterns and the slide show has been updated. I hope to get most of these listed over the weeked and next week in my Ebay store, The Hem Line.

Also, Free Pattern Friday will return next week, I PROMISE!

Best Bread Machine Cinnamon Rolls Recipe

I can't take the credit for this recipe, it came from Recipe Zaar in the form of Cream Cheese Yeast Bread for the Bread Machine. As the contributor suggested, this recipe makes delicious cinnamon rolls (or cinnamon loaf). I have tried several sweet bread doughs and I always come back to this one because has that wonderful soft texture with some weight and body . . . . perfect for cinnamon rolls.

Be sure to set your bread machine for the dough cycle. This is what will come out:

Let the dough rest for a few minutes while you mix up the filling. I use about 1/4 chopped nuts, 1/3 brown sugar, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, and 2 teaspoons of flour. The flour helps the filling thicken, so it won't run all out in the pan.

Mix it up well with a fork, breaking up any big brown sugar lumps.

Soften 3 tablespoons of real butter.

Roll your dough out on a floured board into a rectangle shape, about 14" by 10", it doesn't have to perfect.

Now spread the softed butter on the dough.

Sprinkle with the filling mixture.

Roll it up.

Pinch the edges to seal.

Use a sharp knife and cut into nine rolls. Place in well sprayed pan.

Cover and let rise in a dark warm place. I turn the over on low for just a couple of minutes and then turn off. I also as a large pyrex dish of very hot water to the oven while the rolls are rising AND baking.

Let them rise until they look like this . . . . about 1/2 hour.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes. Use the middle rack and watch them closely. You don't want them to get too brown!

I mixed up a little frosting using about 3 tablespoons of cream cheese, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, 1 tablespoon of milk and enough powdered sugar to get the right consistency.

Yum!

A Little Tech Help

I thought I would share a little PC advice today.

About a month ago my computer was infected with a nasty little virus. It came in the form of a pop-up advising me that my computer was "unprotected" and that I needed to download "anti virus software". I knew this was phoney-baloney, but alas it was too late. The little bugger was already working it's way through my PC disabling my anti-virus software, malware, ad-aware and any other utility I might try to use to destroy the bug. After struggling to try to remove the Trojan virus myself, I resorted to taking the old girl into a tech and plunking down $130 to have it exterminated.

These pesky little bugs are easy to catch. Personally, I think youtube is a primary source and if you kids are like mine, that is the first place they head when they sit down at the computer.

My advice is ARM YOURSELF!

1. Be sure you have an updated anti-virus program running ALL THE TIME. It is important that your anti-virus has a live update. That means the program always is kept informed of the newest, greatest, creepiest viruses circulating the web. I am currently using AVAST. I have paid for the full version. It runs smoothly, updated without slowing my computer down and has an incoming email scanner.

2. Use of a Malware scanner can find malware* that sometimes get past your anti-virus. I use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. I update and run this utility about once a week. If your PC is running slow, do it more often!

3. Ad removal software. Adware come in all forms from practically every website you visit. They show ads and then stick a little temporary file on the your computer that reports personal information back to the source. They build up over time and can really slow your computer down. A good tool to keep them at bay is Ad-Aware. It is free, but a more powerfull version is available to purchase. I have been using the free version with good results.

These are great tools and there are many others. A great way to educate yourself is to visit the CNET website. They review all kinds of programs . . . . the free ones included, and rate them. You can get feedback from folks who are using each utility and determine which tools are right for you.

Remember these programs are great, but you must USE THEM and UPDATE OFTEN!

I made this purse last month from a scrap of upholstery fabric and retro plastic handles. I just listed it in my Etsy shop this morning.

Speaking of sweaters, I found this cute one on the Macy's website. Most of their sweaters are marked WAY down low. This one from $58 to $13.49! They are also offering free shipping on all orders over $75! So, I am off to go shopping!!!

Do You Sell on Artfire?

If so, would you please comment with some pros and cons. I am considering expanding to that venue as well as Etsy, but would like some feedback from others first. Etsy seems to be getting so big. I think the search feature is very bulky. Unless you get quite specific with your search, it returns 1,000s of items, some totally unrelated to what you are looking for! I like the Artfire site, but from what little information I can gather, people that sell both on Etsy and Artfire have substantially lower sales on Artfire. Please comment! Thank you!

I am starting Day 3 of my weight reduction plan, although I don't really have a plan! I just know that everything I wear is tight and I need to shed a few pounds. 20 lbs by May 1st is my goal. We'll see how that goes. I am feeling rather sluggish because I can't move around as well as usual with this sprained ankle. I soooo want to start my 30-day-shred, but that will have to wait until I am completely healed!

For now I am reading different diet blogs and picked up the Sonoma Diet book at Goodwill last week. I know that carbohydrates are not my friend, but the darn three-C's are so good (cookies, chips and crackers).

This week's goal is increase my water intake to at least 4 large glasses a day and eat 2 servings of fruit and 3 servings of vegetables each day instead of any carb food that I would usually have (rice, crackers, bagel, etc.).

I have been on a crochet kick lately. Slippers, dishclothes, granny squares, scarves, and I am working on a vintage poncho. I love the old patterns from the 50s, 60s and 70s!

I found this one in a magazine and saw the instant gratification value. Don't you just love a project that you can whip out while watching a movie or your favorite TV show?

These potholders are made with speed-crosheen mercerized cotton thread, but I think any fine-gauge cotton will work well. The bright colors are what make these so much fun!

Patchwork POT HOLDER
Front: First Strip: Starting at narrow edge with Watermelon, ch 11. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across— 10 sc. Ch 1, turn. Rows 2-10: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Row 11: Sc in each sc across to last sc; draw up a loop in last sc, drop Watermelon, with Tango thread over and draw through both loops on hook— color change made. Break off Watermelon and fasten. Repeating Row 2 for stitch pattern and changing colors as before, work 11 rows with Tango and 11 rows with Rose. Mark last row worked. Second Strip: Work same as First Strip, using the colors in the following order: Rose, Red and Watermelon. Mark last row worked. Third Strip: Work same as First Strip, using colors as follows: Watermelon, Rose and Tango. Mark last row worked.
Sew the 3 strips together with all markers at same edge. Remove markers. Back: With Red, ch 31. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across— 30 sc. Ch 1, turn. Rows 2-34: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. At end of last row, break off and fasten.
Pin Back to Front, being careful to have rows of both pieces in same direction. Edging: Attach Red to any corner, ch 1, working through both thicknesses, * make 3 sc in corner, being careful to keep work flat, sc to next corner. Repeat from * around. Join with si st to first sc, then ch 12 for loop, si st in same sc where last si st was made. Break off and fasten.

Also, a big thank-you to my husband and boys for helping me hobble around the house and for pitching in to help with laundry, dishes, cooking and cleaning since I fell on Sunday and sprained my ankle. You just don't realize how much we depend on being able to get around, painlessly, to accomplish everything we do in the day.

When I fell on Sunday, while packing Christmas decorations back to the basement, I thought for sure that I had broke my foot. I completely missed the bottom step of our basement landing and came down on the side of my right foot. Since my arms were full of boxes, my hands were not readily available to assist me and down I went. I am still amazed that I escaped the catastrophe with just a badly sprained ankle and some road rash (from the plaster wall) on my arm. I am able to hobble around a little. Anthony says I look like a pirate with a peg leg :)

1 Million Pillowcase Challenge

Start the year off right with creating a beautiful pillowcase or two for American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine's "1 Million Pillowcase Challenge" for charity.

What a fun way to brighten someone's day and a great excuse to dig into your stash pile or go shopping!!!

There are hundreds of shops in every state participating in the challenge. All you need to do is visit the APQ website and find the one nearest you, OR you can participate individually. Everything you need is at the site, including some great FREE pattern downloads!

I am going to make a couple of cases with a soft flannel side and a cool cotton side. I love flannel, but I also love to be able to flip my pillow over to a cool side.

A Long Overdue Post

Wow, how bad I have been! So long between posts!

I could make a list an arm long of excuses, like I have been sick with the nastiest cold, my son had oral surgery, we got a new kitten . . . . ooops I wasn't going to go on and on!

Well it is the holiday season, and I spent the weekend following Thanksgiving and the first weekend of this month at the local Christmas Fair. Here are some photos of my booth, which was
a mix of vintage collectibles and handmade items.

And we do have a new kitty! Her name is E-Z (thanks to Ben) and she is adorable and very mellow!

I am busy finishing my Christmas shopping and shipping off packages, but will also be listing a slew of new {vintage and newer} patterns over the next week or so. I am working on the image editing right now. There will be LOTS of doll patterns in this group of listings, so check back in a day or two for the slideshow update.

Movie Recommendation

We went to see The Blind Side on Sunday with our two boys, Anthony 15 and Benjamin 13. I have to give this movie a solid five boxes of popcorn. What a great family movie for those with kids that have outgrown animated monsters and Disney fairytales.

My boys are huge football fans and have followed Michael Oher's career. I think the true story portrayed in The Blind Side only solidified their admiration of Mr. Oher. It was best stated on the Purple State of Mind blog: "But The Blind Side is a much more than a football story. It is a tribute to families, to the power of adoption, to the practical difference one family can make. At a time when we desperately need heroic actions, The Blind Side delivers refreshing role models."

Sandra Bullock gives, in my opinion, an Oscar worthy performance portraying Leigh Anne Tuohy. Tim McGraw is surprising appealing in the role of her husband, Sean. Additional stars include newcomer Quinton Aaron who plays Oher; Lily Collins (daughter of musician Phil Collins) who plays the Tuohy's daughter, Collins; Kathy Bates as Miss Sue; and Jae Head as son Sean, Jr.

I've been busy getting ready for our local Christmas Faire taking place the next two weekends.

Finished this seamstress' apron last night.

It has an attached pin cushion and multiple pockets, including one for your scissors!

I revamped a sewing basket.

I made several bags from this large piece of heavy muslin fabric that I thrifted. It is just a dream to work with!

I added some sheet scraps to this one and quilted it for weight.

This morning I adorned this thrifted crystal wreath with some ribbon and shells . . . . not sure how I feel about it (?).

All of my items are made from thrifted and recycled materials!

I thought I would share what I have been working on lately. I have been hoarding colorful yarn scraps to make this afghan. Mine won't be quite so uniform in color . . . I will use ivory where shown, but I haven't decided on green or ??? yet. I will be using bright colors for the floral centers and the "leaves" will be different shades of green (scraps). I just love this afghan . . . it reminds me of the old grandma's flower garden quilts!

MATERIALS: Worsted-weight yarn— 35½ ozs. white, 29 ozs. green, 4 ozs. dk. yellow, 6 yds. flower color for each motif; tapestry needle; H hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Folks always ask me how I cultivated my ebay success and I don't really have a good answer. After 11 years, I guess I earned my stripes, but I truly couldn't say what makes a great online seller. I have a pretty good idea of what has worked for me, but that doesn't necessarily work for everyone. For ebay, my top five tips would be:

1. Commit. To be ebay successful takes time, patience and perseverance. Always keep your store updated looking snappy. New items are key . . . you need to have some auction items as well as a store.
2. Customer Service. The customer is always right and a happy customer is a repeat customer.
3. Be Reasonable. Consider using "best offer". Price fairly. Don't charge exorbitant handling or shipping fees. View your items through business eyes, not personally. Don't be insulted if an item sells for less than you hoped. Don't be insulted, just move on to the next item!
4. Be consistent. Have business hours so you mail your packages timely, answer email promptly, spend quality time honing your business.
5. Sell what you love. It is no fun selling books if you don't like to read. Be passionate about what you sell and that will come through your listings and correspondence.

Etsy requires a different mentality . . . . a more creative mind if you will. I haven't tapped into my full etsy potential yet . . . . I am still getting my feet wet. Still learning. Maybe you are too. If so, read this and learn.

It's time to start thinking about Christmas and the wonderful pleasure of giving something handmade. I don't even talk about Christmas shopping anymore. Other than a few incidental items picked up throughout the year, most of my "shopping" is done on Etsy and I make many of my own gifts.

We have friends that always invite us for a pre-Christmas potluck. I like to take a little something along for the hostess. We also share a bottle of wine and little gifts with neighbors during the holidays.

Tea Towels and Dish Cloths are always a welcome gift. Easy and fun to make. I prefer the open crocheted dishcloths like the one pictured above. Wrap a couple of new wooden cooking utensils with the dish cloth and tie up with a pretty bow for the perfect hostess gift. Add a cute handmade towel and you have the makings of a wonderful gift basket . . . how about wrapping it all up in a really nice vintage pyrex bowl?

Early Mornings

I won this yarn a week or so ago from "A Tree Huggers Wife" and am so in awe of the beautiful colors. It will take me some time before I can stop staring and turn it into something wonderful.

I have been rising a little earlier than usual this week. Ben started a.m. basketball practice on Monday and has to be at the gym by 6:05. Once I drop him off I have about an hour until DH and Anthony get up. A wonderfully quiet hour with no TV, no phones ringing, no texts pinging, no voices. That is my kind of heaven!

Last week I talked to a friend in Portland that had just finished a long weekend at a large craft fair where she usually does very well. She said sales were dismal and thinks the poor economy is to blame. Not only was attendance down by about 200 per day, but she said her sales were about 1/2 of last year. The interesting part is that she thought the quantity of items sold was up, but the $$ were down. "Little things are what sold", she said.

This got me rethinking my plans for the Christmas Fair I am doing the last weekend of November and first weekend of December. I decided to really build up my inventory of "stocking stuffer" type items. I grabbed my trusty notepad and started jotting ideas . . . . zipper pouches, hair clips, baby booties, t-towels, pot holders, coasters, bibs, totes, gift bag sets, headbands, rag dolls . . .

Do you have any idea how many tutorials are on the web these days? It is amazing . . . anything you could possibly want to make or create has a tutorial. When I wanted to make some headbands, all I had to do was search for headband tutorial and presto! After viewing all the great ideas, I sat down to work and created a bunch in one afternoon! I am going to list a couple on etsy today.

I will also will be adding some great vintage wool and wool-type fabrics (destash) as well as a fabulous 1940's dress print to my etsy vintage store. You can also see that the slide show has been updated with all the new patterns that are coming to my ebay store this week. Whew! That's allot of patterns to photograph and edit!

Starbucks VIA Brew Review

I travelled to the dentist's in La Grande today to have my wonderful $1,000 crown finished. I broke a filling about a month ago. No dental insurance. It's all very depressing!

On my way home I decided a little Starbucks might lift my spirits for the hour and a half drive home. I was given some samples of the new VIA "ready brew" product. Now, I have to admit, I am a borderline coffee snob. I like good coffee. Bold, rich, fresh-brewed coffee with a little creamer and no sugar. Instant coffee has always been synonymous with "yuck" in my opinion. I stuck the samples in my bag and headed down the road, happy to be holding a steaming Venti NF Latte.

A couple of hours after returning home I was craving my afternoon coffee. Usually I would make a partial pot. I remembered the VIA samples in my purse. I was actually pretty excited to try the stuff at this point!

I microwaved a nice hot cup of coffee and added the tiny pouch of very fine ground granules (Italian Roast) along with a splash of cream.

YUM! I am sold!! A great cup of coffee. I am looking forward to trying the Colombian Roast tomorrow!

The convenience of these little tubes is a big bonus as well. My husband immediately commented on how wonderful they would be backpacking or hunting.

I think the cost is a little less than a dollar a cup, so the stuff isn't cheap, but I will probably pick a package up the next time I am in Starbucks. It is delicious and very convenient, especially for a quick cup of afternoon pick-me-up!

Free Pattern Friday GIVEAWAY #52

These slippers were inspired by the old "tube rugs" that grandma used to make! A great way to use up scraps . . . . I am working on a pair of these in a smaller "toddler" size (uses even less fabric!). Will post pictures when I have finished.

Children's Puff Slippers

MATERIALS: 15" x 30" piece fabric; polyester fiberfill; needle and thread.

Finished size: Child's size 9. Add about l%" to length of strips for each larger size.

1. For each sole, cut a 3" x 30" strip of fabric. Sew long edges together, stuffing as you sew to form a tube. Sew ends closed. Fold 5½" from 1 end. Sew together along fold. Wrap remainder of tube around, sewing together as you go.

2. For each top, cut 3 strips 3" x 6½". Form tubes same as for sole. Sew together on long sides. Sew ends to sides of sole at 1 end. Run gathering stitches around toe opeining, pull tight and fasten.

3. For each back, cut a strip 3" x 10". Form tube as before. Beginning at side, sew end under edge of top, sew around the back of the sole and under other side of top.

Thanks to a sudden, brisk cold spell, we bid adeu to the garden a few days ago. Probably a good thing, since we got about 6 inches of snow yesterday! Yikes . . . am I reading my calendar right??? Too soon for that much snow!

My tomatoes are hanging in the shop (wise old farmers have told me they will ripen this way). It was sad to have so many huge, beautiful green tomatoes falling off on the ground, I wanted to cry! I picked up a bunch and came indoors to search the www for recipes. I found Fried Green Tomatoes, Green Tomato Chutney and Green Tomato Bread. We tried the Fried Green Tomatoes for dinner last night. I have to say, I am not a fan. They were OK, but if I am going to eat something fried, I want it to be really delicious!

I haven't been too motivated to try the others yet, since we spent all day Friday butchering Rod's elk. My fingers are sore! Rifle deer season opened yesterday and Ben got his first buck this morning, so we will be cutting that in a few days! It is going to be great to have all that meat in the freezer this winter with two teenage boys in the house!

I finally got back to the computer and finished editing a ton of pattern photos this morning and the slide show has been updated. I should have these all in my eBay store within a week or so. This new group includes a fabulous 1920 Anne Orr Filet Crochet Book and lots of doll clothes and costume patterns!

Laid Off

My summer waitressing job came to close yesterday. Actually the Glacier Grill restaurant closed last night for the season. So, I now join the ranks of the unemployed. Not a bad thing . . . I can devote more time to all those things I love to do around the home. I will miss the tips though!

Today I am working on dividing my iris.The Welsummers like to help! In a few days, we will be butchering Rod's elk. He scored this beautiful 6x6 last night . . . . the last evening of Archery Elk Season! I hope this photo doesn't offend anyone :)

Thank goodness for Macy's!

I am sorry local retailers. I have tried to "shop local", but you just don't have "my style". Not that I am that complicated or difficult. But, I just can't do the cow-girl look.

Macy's is my best friend. My comfort zone. The place I can always go and find something cute, stylish, affordable and "my style".

The added bonus is online shopping. When you live 90+ miles from the nearest store and you just need a little shopping therapy, online will do in a pinch. Jeans are a perfect example. I love the Macy's website for jeans shopping. Bandolino jeans fit my body type perfect and they are on sale at Macys.com for $29.99! I just ordered two pairs and these cute INC capris. Free shipping over $99!

I am lusting for this Jones NY coat! The color just sends me . . . . not absolute red and definately very Fall looking! And someday, I will have a pair of 7 jeans . . . . maybe for my 50th birthday!

Academy of Art University Spring 2010 Dress

After perusing the array of photos from Spring 2010 Fashion Week, I have one comment . . . . . actually . . . . . a big yawn! For the most part I found the fashions quite boring. Grey, white, pale yellow and lots of dull chartreuse. Most of the designs are repeats of last years too short strapless dress, evening gown or simple sheath.

Now, I don't pretend to be a fashion expert and am definately not a red carpet diva, but from what I see people making and purchasing patterns for, the trends lean more toward:

1. Nautical - sailor pants and tops are HOT!

2. 60s Modern - especially tent dresses with open shoulders and neckline details, sheer layers

3. Sweetheart - gals want to look feminine and pretty, so the 40s girly dresses continue to be very popular

4. Wide leg pants and trousers - any era - I think the cuffed, high rise belted trousers will make a comeback

5. Reversible and wrap around designs - versatility is a big bonus!

The theme for the National Sewing Month contest is Reuse, Remake, Restyle. Buzz words that we have all been hearing for the last couple of years, mostly since Etsy's rise to superstardom in the Craftster-Do-It-Yourself world. It is not like this hasn't been done before. I am quite sure grandma cut up old men's shirts or discarded dresses for quilt blocks.

Materials required:
1 pair Knitting Needles Size 19 Crochet Hook K or 10½
12 ounces 4-ply Knitting Worsted for Small Size and Medium 16 ounces for Large size
Directions are given for small size —8-10 Changes for medium — 12 -14 and large sizes-16-18 are in parentheses
NOTE: Yarn is used double throughout.

GAUGE: 2 sts=l inch

PATTERN:
Row 1: K 1, * YO, K 2 tog, repeat from * across. Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: * K 2 tog, YO, repeat from * across row ending with K 1. Row 4: Purl.
VEST: Cast on 65 (69-73) sts. Work in pattern for 27 rows, ending with Row 3 of pattern.
Row 28: Purl across 13 (15-17) sts. Bind off next 7 sts, purl across 25 sts (for all sizes), bind off next 7 sts, purl across remaining 13 (15-17) sts. RIGHT FRONT: Work 4 rows in pattern over first 13 (15-17) sts. Row 5: Bind off 8 sts at neck edge, complete row by working YO, K 2 tog, across row. The sewing industry annually honors approximately fifty million people who sew at home and approximately forty million people who sew at least part of their wardrobes. Their initiative, creativity, and self-reliance are characteristic of the people of our Nation.
The home sewing industry generates an estimated $3,500,000,000 annually for the economy of the United States. Home sewing also has enhanced career opportunities for many Americans in fields such as fashion, retail merchandising, design, patternmaking, and textiles. Learning the art of sewing in the home or in elementary school home economics classes started many on careers in these fields.
In recognition of the importance of home sewing to our Nation, the Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 173, has designated the month of September 1985 as ``National Sewing Month,'' authorizing and requesting the President to issue a proclamation in observance of this month.

Too Much Gardening Too Little Sewing

My garden has gone into overload!

I made another batch of zucchini relish yesterday morning. This time I spice it up and made the following changes:

reduced zucchini to 8 cups
reduced sugar to 2-3/4 cups
reduce nutmeg slightly
increased mustard slightly
increased black pepper slightly
used 2 red peppers instead of 1
added 3 jalapenos, including seeds, finely chopped
added 3 large garlic cloves, minced
added 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

It hasn't "aged" yet, but the fresh flavor was "wow-za"! Not too hot, but it does creep up on you after a few bites. Can't wait too see how it is out of the jar in the few weeks!

These pepper plants don't seem to mind that the deer keep all the leaves eaten off the top . . . they are still producing like crazy!
Same for my Japanese eggplant bushes!

Our corn has reached over 7 feet tall in places!

This is two tomato plants in a 5' square box. We finally gave up on staking . . .

And the apples are ripe . . . apple sauce and butter tomorrow!

Sweet Zucchini Relish

More canning is underway!
I tried a new recipe a few days ago. I found this one on RecipeZaar (my favorite cooking site . . . can you tell?). I used my trusty old meat grinder to grind the zucchini and onions. Next time I make this I will use a little less sugar and one more red pepper to add a little more color. It is yummy delicious . . . guaranteed to make you want to BBQ burgers or polish dogs for dinner!

Glady's Zucchini Relish

10 cups fresh zucchini, unpeeled and ground (about 4 large)
4 cups ground onions
5 tablespoons salt
2 1/4 cups white vinegar
4 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 teaspoons celery salt
1 tablespoon nutmeg
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon turmeric
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 green pepper, finely chopped
1 sweet red pepper, finely chopped

1) Mix first 3 listed ingredients together well and let stand overnight.
2) In morning, drain; rinse in cold water and drain again.
3) In large kettle mix the next 8 ingredients and bring to a boil.
4) After a boil is reached, add the zucchini mix along with the green and red sweet pepper.
5) Bring to a boil again.
6) Simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes.
7) Pour into hot jars and process in hot water bath for 5 minutes, to seal.

If you have never canned before, FEAR NOT! Read this article on the basics, head down to Walmart and pick up your supplies, and you will be on your way!

Baby Grows Up

My daughter, Mindy, turned 21 last week. Everyone thinks you are an adult when you turn 18, but to me the real bar is set at 21. Most kids have been out on their own for a year or two, dealing more and more on their own with day to day problems. Some young adults flourish, while others flounder. My beautiful daughter has flourished. It took a few months for her to decide that college was not for her. She made her own decisions, found a job, moved to a nearby community, found a better job and has been financially independent for over two years. Needless to say, I am a proud mom!

We switched our auto insurance to Ameriprise Insurance through Costco two years ago, when we were in an accident (not our fault) which totalled my vehicle. We had Farmers Insurance through a local agent at that time and received the most horrible service imaginable. Our vehicle was determined to be totalled in 3 days, the other driver was cited at the scene, and it was a closed book case, but it still took over 3 months to get our settlement and the local agent was completely uninvolved. I have been so impressed with Ameriprise. Not only is our premium lower for more and expanded coverage, but our rates have dropped on each renewal date!

The second letter was from our health insurance provider Lifewise. As expected, those rates are going up, again. Every six months our rates increase. We now will be paying $332 per month for a healthy family of four. Our deductible is a whopping $7,500 and we have a 25% co-pay. You would think that because of this I would be in favor of the Obama Health Care Reform Act . . . . but I am not. I started out liking the idea and believing that some government intervention could possibly reform the health insurance industry, but now I am scared. I want to make my own decisions, entirely on my own. And I honestly don't believe the government is capable of efficiently and effectly operating an industry as huge and complicated as healthcare. I don't think they could operate even 10% of it. Private industry provides its' own checks and balances, but there are no checks and balances where the government is concerned and I don't care who the controlling party is. I don't trust them . . . . with my healthcare or any thing else. I might be a control freak, but that is the way I currently feel.

It seems to me that so much more could be done to reform the health insurance industry. I don't know all the whys and hows, but why don't I get a break in my premium if no one in my family has seen a doctor in the past six months? Why can't we get a "healthy discount"?

Change is needed, reform is needed, government takeover is not needed, not even 10%.

Who would have thought!

Burlap for tablecloths.

I received a request for a handmade, custom, burlap tablecloth the other day. I guess I wasn't up to speed on this new fad. Burlap is rustic, neutra, natural, comes in various weight and colors and best of all inexpensive!

Beautiful!

I saw the plain old undyed scratchy stuff at Walmart last night for $2.80 a yard. If you desire something more refined or a color, many online fabric stores carry a wide assortment. I found burlap in up to 60" width!

Raspberry Jam

I picked raspberries at a local farm yesterday and made jam this morning. I used a new recipe and thought I would share because it was so easy! This jam required no pectin . . . raspberries have enough natural pectin to thicken the jam just right!

Raspberry Jam

yield 3 pints

Gently wash fresh picked raspberries Measure 6 cups of whole berries

Place berries in large stock pot over medium high heat

Mash berries with a potato masher

Boil mashed berries (full rolling boil) for 2 minutes add four cups of sugar and stir well

return to full rolling boil, stirring constantly, 4 minutes

remove from heat and beat with mixer for 4 minutes

see how the foam dissapears?

pour into sterilized jars and seal

isn't it neat how there is always a little left over?

Good to be Home

After spending seven out of the last 20 days away (on two different trips) it is good to be home. I am enjoying the first of three days off (from my summer waitressing job) and am looking forward to getting so many projects done (over-achiever).

I updated the slide show last night, so you can preview the new listings that will be coming in the near future.

I spent a few days visiting my parents in California. Although the 12 hour road trip is brutal, it was nice to spend some time just hanging out with the folks. It was pretty warm, so everyone's energy level was pretty low, but we managed a full day of shopping at the Galleria (mall) in Roseville.

On the trip down, we were forced to take a different route than planned to do a forest fire. We chose to travel down part of the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway . . . a route I had never taken. It was stunning!

An added bonus was being able to stop at Trader Joe's in Bend, Oregon on the way home. I love this store! I stocked up on pasta sauces, California olive oil, spices, wine and some great sourdough bread. If you haven't tried Trader Joe's Vodka Pasta Sauce, you must do so. It is the best! I tossed it with pasta the first night and topped with fresh grated parmesean. I used up the jar last night in an impromptu vegetarian casserole with garlic, onions, fresh garden zucchini, fresh basil and rosemary and a can of white beans. Yummy!

Dusting off the Cobwebs!

First of all, I must apologize for my very long absence! I don't think I have ever let this blog slide for so long. I have done a bit of traveling over the past few weeks and spent many hours tending my garden and yard. It has now turned quite hot, so I will be able to spend more time at my trusty PC without feeling guilty for not being out enjoying the sunshine.

Before I share pictures and tales of my travels, I have a favor to ask. I have a dear friend in Switzerland who would like to trade her collection of vintage sewing patterns. Easiest Clothespin Bag

I have had this item on my to-do list for awhile. I don't know why I procrastinated for so long! This little clothespin bag took me about 10 minutes to make.

I used an old wooden hanger and some scraps of oil cloth. I think the oil cloth might not fade as quickly as other woven fabrics do. The width of the bag is determined by your hanger (plus seam allowances). Cut out the square bag, following the line of the top of the hanger for the top of your bag. Of course you need a front and back. I then slashed the front about 2/3 of the way down and quickly finished the raw edge with some seam binding and a wide zig-zag stitch. Stitch all sides together, using a 1/4" seam. Clip corners and turn right side out. I use an old wooden knitting needle to gently nudge the corners out. Insert your hanger and PRESTO!

It's so nice to be line drying again . . . . I love SUMMER!

Slide Show

Some of you have been wondering how to locate a pattern you like from the slide show. About every two-three weeks I have a new box of patterns checked and ready to list. When I shoot the photos, I update the slide show. It takes me at least a couple of weeks to get them all listed in the ebay store, so they will not appear there right away.

If there is a particular pattern that you are interested in, you can email me and I will either A) sell it to you outright or B) send you a link when I get it listed. If you want to search for yourself, just visit my eBay Store The Hem Line and use the search box located in the upper left corner. Just type in the pattern number and check "search title and description". You should be able to find the pattern, if available, that way. Note: if you move your cursor over the pattern in the slide show, the pattern number should appear.

Sometimes items in the slide show will be listed in my Etsy shops, but not patterns - they all go to eBay.

The patterns in the current slide show have all been listed. Only a few have sold, so you should be able to find them all using the search tool.

Vintage Pattern Pricing part 2

First and foremost, thank you everyone for your input about pattern price, condition, sizing, etc. Your comments confirmed the processes I use when listing patterns. I really try to keep my prices fair. I rarely even think about sizing when pricing. Complete is key. Envelope condition is secondary (although I do adjust my price a little when the envelope is really bad).

So, let's talk a little more today. What about printed vs. not printed? The older the pattern is, the less detailed the instructions are. Does this matter to you? Are the unprinted patterns so hard for you to use that you shy away from them?

I found this pattern yesterday when digging through those boxes I keep telling you about. I momentarily lost my breath! Isn't it wonderful! A size 40 (bust 40, hip 43). It is complete and the pieces are in perfect condition. What would you expect to see this listed for? What would you pay?
I think I should wait a few months and use the auction format. It is so slow on eBay right now, I am worried I won't get a fair price.

2 Ply (2 oz. folded skeins): 7 skeins

Wooden knitting pins, 1 pair No. 13 (8 mm. size).

Starting at narrow edge, cast on 47 sts. Work in garter st (k each row) until piece measures 30 inches. Next row: Bind off 2 sts, * drop next st, (cast on 1 st and bind it off) twice; bind off next st. Repeat from * across to within last 2 sts. Bind off last 2 sts.

FRINGE . . . Cut 3 strands of Blue, each 18 inches long. Double these strands to form a loop, insert crochet hook in first st and draw loop through. Draw loose ends through loop and pull up tightly. Make a. fringe in each ridge across at both short ends. Trim ends evenly.

Vintage Pattern Pricing

I am asking for your input regarding a subject that I constantly struggle with. How to price my vintage patterns in my eBay Store, The Hem Line. I have seen some other blog posts about the exhorbitant cost some dealers charge for their patterns. That's not me, if anything I usually charge too little!

When I am selling a pattern that I feel is super special or rare, I usually list it as an auction . . . . let the folks decide what it is worth. Sometimes I get a great price and others the high bidder gets the great deal!

It is VERY difficult for me ever to list a pattern for more than $9.99. I did sell a couple of 1940's swimsuit patterns a few months back for $19.99, but they were unused and just all around wonderful!

Who is to decide what is desirable? What about condition? I RARELY sell a pattern that is incomplete, but what if the envelope is very tattered, how does that affect price? Is size a consideration? Should a wonderful 1950's dress pattern in a size 20 be worth more than a size 10?

I use the Vintage Pattern Wiki for reference. I wonder if a price recommendation would be good additional information to add there?

This pattern is complete, pieces in good condition, Misses size 18, but the envelope is very poor. What would you charge?

The Times are a Changin'

Sometimes you just gotta do it. I quit one of my jobs yesterday. This decision has been a long time in coming, but that didn't make it any easier. This past weekend I did some soul searching, trying to figure out where my priorities were. The past few years I have worked very hard to build my home businesses (i.e. ebay and etsy) and am very proud of what I have accomplished. I took a bookkeeping job, not because I was looking for one, but rather because a friend thought I might enjoy this 10 hour a week job. Well that job evolved to be 16 hours a week for a very demanding (and irritating) boss. Then I decided to try waitressing this summer. I love it! It is hard work, but lots of fun and my boss and co-workers are great. The past few weeks have been horrible. I couldn't keep the pace any longer. Yesterday I quit the bookkeeping job. Whew! What a relief. Don't get me wrong, we could use the money, but my sanity and . . . well . . . you know "If mama ain't happy, no one is happy" . . . . . .

So now hopefully very soon, mama can get back to doin' what she loves . . . . taking care of her family, crafting and selling my vintage patterns and other goodies, and a little waitressing on the side. Still very busy, but happy!

How much does that machine cost (approximately)? about $799
What types of things do you sew (i.e. quilting, clothing, handbags, home dec projects, etc.)? Everything!
How much do you sew? Weekly
How much wear and tear does the machine get? I try to take care, but it does mend jeans and such from time to time.
Do you like/love/hate your machine? Love it!
Are you ambivalent? Passionate? Does she have a name? No, No, No, just very happy with it and would buy the same again.
What features does your machine have that work well for you? Auto buttonholes and blanket stitch.
Is there anything that drives you nuts about your machine? I wish I could adjust the blanket stitch more precisely.
Would you recommend the machine to others? Why? Moderately priced, easy to operate, fun to use!
What factors do you think are important to consider when looking for a new machine? You should spend time with the machine you are considering before committing. Go to a sewing machine retailer, not a big box store. They should have a place set up that you can try out different machines. Also, buy local so you can get service if you need it.
Do you have a dream machine? For now I have found my dream machine and am still discovering new tricks!

Iris Time

My iris are finally starting to bust out. I thought I would share a few photos! These flowers hold a special place in my heart. Of all the gorgeous plants my grandmother had in her huge garden, it is the iris I remember best. She had a large square bed filled with iris. She meticulously divided and labeled them, sharing with my mother, and other relatives and friends, I suppose.

I purchased this eyeglass chain from AnChelle, a super gracious lady. These are just what I needed for sewing and crafting, since I was forever misplacing my reading specs!

CROCHET DUFFLE BAG
Bag measures 18 indies long.
Use Craft, Rug or Sturdy Wool Yarn, 3-ply, 4oz

2 skeins of Turquoise, 1 skein Lime Green, 2 ounces each Orange and Tangerine
Crochet Hook, Size J.
18" Zipper

GAUGE: 3 sts = 1 inch; 3 rows = 1 inch.
Be sure to check your gauge before starting article. Use any size hook which will obtain the stitch gauge above.

Main Section: Starting at side edge of bag with Green, ch 79, having 3 ch sts to 1 inch.

1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across to within last ch, draw up a loop in last ch, drop Green, with Turquoise, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook, break off Green. Always change color in this manner. Ch 1, turn.

2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeating 2nd row for stitch pattern, work 13 more rows with Turquoise, then work 4 rows Green, 2 rows Turquoise, 4 rows Orange, 2 rows Turquoise, 10 rows Tangerine, 2 rows Turquoise, 4 rows Orange, 2 rows Turquoise, 4 rows Green, 14 rows Turquoise and 1 row Green. At end of last row, break off and fasten. The edges with end sts of rows will be used for zipper opening.

End Circle (Make 2): Starting at center with Turquoise, ch 2. 1st rnd: Make 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Mark last sc to indicate end of rnd and continue moving up marker at end of each rnd.

2nd rnd: Make 2 sc in each sc around —12 sc.

3rd rnd:* 2 sc in next sc — 1 sc increased; sc in next sc. Repeat from * around — 6 sc increased.

4th rnd: * 2 sc in next sc, sc ineach of next 2 sc. Repeat from * around —24 sc.

5th through 12th rnds: Increasing 6 sc evenly spaced and being careful that incs do not fall directly over incs of previous rnd, sc in each sc around. At end of last rnd, join with sl st to first sc Breakoff and fasten.

13th rnd: Attach Green to joining of previous rnd, ch 1, then repeat 5th rnd — 78 sc. Join, break off and fasten.

Handle (Make 2): With Lime Green ch 79, having 3 ch sts to 1 inch.

1st rnd: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across to within last ch, make 3 sc in last ch; working along opposite side of starting chain, sc in each ch across to within first ch used, make 2 sc in same ch where first sc was made. Join with sl st to first sc.

2nd rnd: Ch 1, 2 sc in joining, sc in each sc across to within the 3-sc group at oppposite end, make 2 sc in each of next 3 sc, sc in each remaining sc to within last 2 sc, 2 sc in each of last 2 sc. Join, break off and fasten.

Sew zipper in place along zipper opening. With wrong sides together, pin one circle in place around each side opening. Attach Green to any st of one side opening. Working through both thicknesses, sl st in each sc around. Join, break off and fasten. Complete other side in same way.

Sew handles in place as shown.

Spring and the Livin' is Easy

. . . for my chickens. They are getting quite friendly and now will venture out more than 10 feet away from their coop. Look how much they have grown!

The iris bulbs that I purchased on etsy last summer are up and just starting to bud. I can't wait to see all those pretty colors!

Spring earliest arrivals are these wild daffodils and violets. They are all over my yard, but I gave up on trying to keep them at bay . . . they are just too prolific!
